When Garrison woke, he was back in the foxhole he’d just run from. There was water on his face, and his surroundings were spinning in circles. He could hear the familiar sounds of a battle—gunfire, English-spoken commands, Japanese words in the distance. His head ached, and when he touched his temple he found warm, sticky blood.

Fielding had blood splattered across his face too, and Garrison was able to focus enough to see that his fellow Marine was wiping blood off his knife.

“You all right, Sarge? Took care of the Nip after he tried to stick ya. Wasn’t as dead as you thought he was, eh?”

“I gotta get this ammo out to the rest of my men.” Garrison tried to crawl toward the ammo can, but when everything turned in circles again, he fell back and held his head in his hands.

Japanese gunfire increased, but Garrison could hear that the American fire was coming less frequently. It was so sporadic it was clear that his men were holding back to make every shot count more than the previous one, a clear sign that they were almost out of ammo.

“I’ll go,” Fielding said and grabbed two ammo cans. “I’ll come back for you when I’m through.”

Garrison didn’t want him to go, but the rest of his men needed ammo. As Fielding ran off, Garrison’s men, nearly out of ammo, were barely firing anymore. Fielding needed to get to them right away.
